BELLE RIVE FARMS

Our History

In 1958, Dirk de Beer bought a farm on the banks of the Vaal River in the Free State province of South Africa. The farm was known in the district as “Vanaswegenshoek”. It started as a mixed farming enterprise with 4 hectares (9ac) of flood irrigation and around 200 hectares (494ac) dryland farming, mostly maize.

Small scale dryland potato and flood irrigation potato farming followed 10 years later. Overhead pivot irrigation took another 15 years to be implemented on the farm.

The farm was taken over by Stanley de Beer, son of Dirk, in 1998. Since then the farm started trading under the “Belle Rive” name – translated from the French term “beautiful river”
